10 Top Last Minute Tips

Ideas to make the most of your End-to-End
1. For the two days prior to the event drink an extra 4-8 cups of fluid. Avoid alcoholic drinks as they can cause dehydration. Eat a healthy diet with regular meals and snacks and be certain to include carbohydrates.
2. Two hours before the event, drink 2 cups of fluid-preferably water and 15 minutes before you start, drink another 2 cups of water.
3. Stop at every Waterstop and drink ½ - 1 cup of water or fluid and be certain to take a sports drink if it’s offered at a waterstop. Along the way, pass up the temptation to buy either soft drinks or full strength fruit juices. The high sugar content in these beverages can give you stomach cramps and can cause fatigue.
4. To help prevent blisters, Bring along an extra pair of socks and make a change when your feet get sweaty.
5. Apply Vaseline to any areas of the body where friction might cause a problem.
6. Wear a hat and apply sunscreen before you leave home. You’ll be glad you did!
7. Start the event at a comfortable pace that allows you to walk and talk. If you have energy to spare, speed up towards the end of the walk, not at the beginning when you are trying to establish a pace that works for the long distance.
8. If your legs feel sore, try calf stretches on a flat surface or holding on to a support, (could be a friend!) stand at the front edge of a step and press your heels downward, one foot at a time. Some walkers believe that short spurts of running helps to ease some of the discomfort.
9. If you have a medical condition, make certain that you fill in a red medic alert tag and display it in a prominent place.
10. Have fun! Hundreds of End-to-End volunteers will be on the roads and on the water to help keep you safe and happy on your way to the Finish at Dockyard. If a problem arises, just ask one of them for help. Enjoy!
