Duke of Edinburgh turns out for End-to-End

Past and present 'Dukers' to join in

Every year the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Bermuda has hundreds of young people between the ages of 14 and 25 years old participate in its programme. You may have seen them from time to time trekking along Bermuda’s highways and byways carrying backpacks and camping on Bermuda’s national parks, islands and beaches. Well this year is no different except that some of these young people will be using the Caitlin End-to-End taking place on May 3rd 2008 as part of their Award requirements.

The challenge has been sent out from the Award Council to all participants, leaders, assessors, trustees, council members, alumni, volunteers and friends of the Award to have at least 200 participants representing the Duke of Edinburgh programme on that day.

So far Warwick Academy and current Gold Level Participants have taken up the challenge and modified their expedition schedules to incorporate the Caitlin End-to-End into their journeys. Four Warwick Academy groups totalling some 25 students who will be camping and trekking during that weekend as part of their final expedition requirement will journey from Ports Island to Dockyard with Caitlin End-to-End.

In addition, current Gold Level Participants totalling some 20 students 16 years and older from various schools island-wide must undertake practice walks in preparation for their 50 mile expedition overseas this summer and will be utilising the Caitlin End-to-End as one of their practice walks.

Erica Smith, National Director of the Award programme, stated that “We are extremely excited that the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has been selected as one of the six charities to benefit from an End-to-End grant this year. As such the Award Council has decided that it would like to see as many Award participants, volunteers, alumni and friends play a part in the this year’s event in order to show support and appreciation for being chosen. In addition to supporting our charity, the more people that participate, the more funds will be raised to support all the wonderful charities benefitting this year. We see this as an excellent way to raise the public profile of the Award as we continue to build partners with us on our journey of engaging, developing and challenging young Bermudians everywhere. We look forward to more ‘Dukers’ joining us on the day!”
